Children’s Discovery Museum, McLean County Unit 5 Distributes 1,000 Activity Kits | local education

NORMAL – One thousand elementary and junior high school students at McLean County Unit 5 Day Camps received STEAM-centric activity kits through the Children’s Discovery Museum and the school district.

“We know everyone is working hard to ensure that students receive the best education possible during this time,” said Rachel Carpenter, education manager at the Children’s Discovery Museum. “We hope these activities will make the work of the animators a little easier.”

The activity kits, which focus on science, technology, engineering, art and math, were made possible by a donation from the Zimmerman-Elfline Donor Advised Fund through the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation.

Staff at the Children’s Museum and Unit 5’s Career Transition Program have designed free Activity Kit kits, which contain open-ended questions to stimulate “playful learning.”

“Students in full-day programs need quick and easy activities that require little or no facilitation so they can have fun learning during transition times and not disturb other students in their group” , said Dayna Brown, director of communications for Unit 5.

The Unit 5 Vocational Education program prepares students with disabilities for transition to the workforce and community involvement during and after high school.
