Santa Monica History Museum appoints John Kearns as first-ever Executive Director
The Santa Monica History Museum (SMHM) named John Kearns as its very first Executive Director. Kearns, who began his tenure with SMHM in September, oversees all museum operations, including development, education and public programming, finance, external communications and staffing.
âI am delighted to join the Santa Monica History Museum, as the museum’s board of trustees has entrusted me with leading this remarkable institution into the future,â said Kearns. “I look forward to working closely with our staff and the communities we serve in Santa Monica, and ensuring that we fulfill our mission to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for the benefit of all. generations to come. “
With over a decade of museum experience, Kearns has held a number of leadership roles including several Director of Development positions at the Heritage Square Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Vincent Price Art Museum, and Grand Performances. . In these institutions he was responsible for all fundraising and communication activities and helped secure significant funding ranging from individual donations to corporate and private foundations.
In the announcement, SMHM Museum President Susan Gabriel Potter said: âI am delighted to welcome John Kearns as the very first Executive Director of the museum and look forward to working with him and presenting him to our wonderful community. With our experience in fundraising for museums, our Board of Directors is confident that we will be able to secure new funding and foster new relationships for SMHM.
Kearns holds a BA in Journalism and an MA in History from California State University, Northridge.
