Union Minister Jitendra Singh opens science museum in Himachal Pradesh and links it to startups

Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science and Technology and MoS PMO, on Saturday inaugurated a science museum in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Shri Jairam Thakur and other dignitaries were also present.

Linking the museum to startups, the minister said, “The state-of-the-art institution in this hilly region will inspire young children to discover their potential and use their innovative skills to find a source of income later in life.”

“DBT-NIPGR-Pandit Jaiwant Ram Upmanyu Science Museum” is established by the National Plant Genome Research Institute, an autonomous institute of the Department of Biotechnology, at Government Boys Senior Secondary School (GBSSS) of Chamba.

He added that the rich biodiversity of Himachal Pradesh is most suitable for fostering agritech startups, and the Department of Biotechnology is ready to help young innovators dive into the ongoing startup boom in the country – the third largest in the world.

Singh said the geography and climatic conditions in Himalayan states like Himachal Pradesh favor the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, which can be developed into agro-tech and aromatic enterprises.

The minister noted that Chamba is ranked second in health and nutrition in March 2019, ranked among the best districts in basic infrastructure in November 2020 and second overall in October 2021 in India among the 117 districts identified by NITI Aayog.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has taken the initiative to set up 75 science museums in different ambitious districts across the country, he added.

To enable the use of their potential, the Aspirational Districts program focuses closely on improving people’s ability to fully participate in the growing economy.

Districts are encouraged to first catch up with the best district in their state and then aspire to become one of the best in the nation by competing with and learning from others in the spirit of competitive and cooperative federalism.
